Moving Tips

Moving can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be.

At Moving Made Simple, we’ve helped so many families and individuals across Michigan through their moves, and we truly understand how stressful it can get.

That’s why we created this guide — to share simple, practical tips that can make your move smoother and less chaotic.

Whether you’re staying close by within 50 miles or heading across the state a little preparation goes a long way.

These tips come straight from our real-world experience on the job every day. We’ve seen what works, what doesn’t, and how small steps can save you time, protect your belongings, and reduce those moving-day headaches.

Think of this as friendly advice from your local moving team.

We genuinely want your move to go well — even if you decide to handle some of it yourself. And if at any point it feels like too much, remember that we’re just a call away, ready to step in and take care of everything with the same care we’d give our own things.

Take a moment to read through the tips below. We hope they help you feel more confident and prepared.

Whenever you’re ready, Moving Made Simple is here to help make your move simpler and stress-free.

MAKE A LIST

Creating a moving list is one of the easiest ways to stay on top of things. It helps you organize tasks, remember important dates, packing priorities, and anything you might need help with.

Start early, keep it simple and check things off as you go.

You'll feel so much more in control and less stressed as moving day approaches!

SAY GOODBYE TO UNUSED STUFF

Before you start packing, take time to say goodbye to things you no longer use or need. Go through each room and sort items into "keep", "sell/donate", or "trash" piles. Selling or donating unused furniture, clothes, and household goods will lighten your load, save you money on the move, and give your belongings a second life.

A cleaner, lighter move feels a lot better - and it makes your unpacking in your new home much simpler!

GET STURDY, UNIFORM PACKING SUPPLIES

Having the right packing supplies makes all the difference.

Stock up on sturdy boxes in various sizes, bubble wrap or packing paper for fragile items, plenty of strong tape, and permanent marker for labeling. Color coding labels for each room (for example, red for kitchen, blue for bedroom) can help unloading go much faster & smoother. Don't forget moving blankets for furniture and furniture pads to protect walls and floors. Getting quality supplies upfront saves you headaches later and helps keep your belongings safe during the move.

PACK THE BASICS YOURSELF

Some items are best packed by you personally - especially the everyday basics you'll need right away in your new home.

Set aside a "First Night" or "Essentials" box with things like toiletries, medications, a change of clothes, phone chargers, snacks, important documents, and basic cleaning supplies.

Pack these yourself so you know exactly where they are and can access them easily on moving day or your first night.

Keep this box with you (in your car or with the driver) will make settling in much smoother and less stressful.
